American Idol Report

Barry Gibb/ Bee Gees night.

What a mess! No one could master the songs. The Bee Gees were quite unique with their use of falsettos and brotherly harmonies and its hard to duplicate. Plus trying to reproduce the disco beats and timing of the songs in a live settings proved difficult. No one was good. However, they weren't all equally bad. Some sucked worst than others. I mean you, Blake.

Melinda - "Inside and Out" and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?"
I thought Melinda's numbers were a bit of a mess. Her stage movements on the first song were so wooden that it completely diverted attention from her vocals, which were adequate at best. Her only saving grace was in turning the second half of "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" into a big time show tune. The first half was bad and I hated her changing the lyric of "How can a loser ever win?". I still don't like her, but she wasn't the worst tonight. Rating: fair

Blake - "You Should Be Dancing" and some unknown song - Very bad song selection. "You Should Be Dancing" is nothing but a falsetto chorus and the other song was totally bland. The beat boxing has its place, but it shouldn't divert us from the fact that Blake just isn't a very good singer. Rating: bad

Lakisha - "Stayin' Alive" and "Run To Me" - I never knew that male falsetto songs wouldn't fit quite right with a female vocalist. I thought Lakisha was ok on both of her songs but not great by any means. I appreciate that she did attempt to show a softer side on "Run To Me" but it didn't quite work. Still she wasn't the worst, Blake. At least she has a voice. Rating: fair

Jordin - "To Love Somebody" and "I Am a Woman in Love" - Jordin wins this week based on song selection. She was the only one who managed to pick songs appropriate to her style. She did adequately, which was better than any of the others. Rating: fair +

This weeks ratings:
1. Jordin
2. Melinda
3. Lakisha
4. Blake

Who should go: Blake
Who will go: Blake

I think being the last remaining male works to Blake's advantage, but I think his performance was so bad this week that it won't be nearly enough. There is just a vast canyon between his singing skill and the other 3. Plus he's much less cute as a brunette.
