My 15 year old son is now taller than me. He's 5'10 on his way to over 6 feet. Surprisingly my reaction is not pride but annoyance. Essentially the message is "Move out of the way old man! Your time is passing". Which is kind of depressing, even more so because its true.

but he's still skinny, or scrawny, whichever, and you can still pick him up.
My son is about to pass me. I have never experienced that odd feeling, which must be common. You are right, that my time is diminishing as they are coming into their own personhood. I'm just hoping there is still enough time to teach them everything they need, to enjoy every moment I can.
My son keeps me up to date on his size by making us stand back to back at the bathrooom mirror and forcing me to acknowledge his ominous overtaking of me.
E passed me by last May. She has at least 4 inches on me.
And it is very scarey....
