Deacon Blues by Steely Dan (click to listen)
One from 1977. The story that I heard was that the song title came from the fact that, at the time, the Alabama Crimson Tide were the number 1 ranked football team in the country. At that time, someone also ran a "bottom 10" that ranked the worst 10 teams in the country. The number one bad team were the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Hence the line, "They've got a name for the winners of the world, I want a name when I lose. They call Alabama the Crimson Tide, call me Deacon Blues".
That was my first year at UVa where we had a bad team also. In fact the only win of the year was beating Wake Forest on a last second field goal.
